The Vancouver Excavating Company handles digging, grading, trenching and land clearing for homeowners, builders and landowners in Vancouver, Washington and across Clark County, from Camas and Washougal to Battle Ground, Ridgefield, La Center and Brush Prairie, and across the river in Portland.
Earthwork in the Northwest is planned around the rain. Sandy flood gravel under much of Vancouver drains well, but the clay uplands to the north stay wet for months, creeks and wetlands cross many lots, and slopes can slide when saturated. Douglas firs, big lots and rural acreage add clearing, long driveways and septic work.
A job begins with a look at your site. We check the soil, the slope, the trees, the access and the buried lines, confirm the city or county permits and any critical-area rules, and then write out the scope and price. Every dig starts with a Washington 811 request and white marks on the ground.

Frequently asked questions
How much does excavation cost in Vancouver, WA?
HomeGuide's national 2026 figures run $2.50 to $15.00 per cubic yard, and $1,100 to $5,600 for a typical home project. We did not set those national numbers. Wet clay, trees and haul-off move Clark County jobs most, so we quote after seeing the site.
Do I need to call 811 before digging in Washington?
Yes. Mark the area in white and contact Washington 811 at least two full business days, and no more than ten, before digging. Locate marks are good for 45 days.
Can you dig in the rainy season?
Often, with crushed rock, fabric, pumping and erosion control. Big grading on clay is best scheduled for drier months.
Why is my crawl space wet every winter?
Usually the grade slopes toward the house or roof water drops at the foundation. Regrading, downspout lines and a footing drain fix most homes.
Do you clear wooded lots?
Yes. We clear Douglas fir, alder and blackberry, pull stumps where building will happen and keep trees and buffers that must stay.
Do you work in Portland?
Yes. Portland digs follow Oregon's one-call rules and Portland's own permit office, and we check both before starting.
How much does excavation cost in Vancouver?
It depends on the size of the dig, soil and rock conditions, access for equipment and how much material has to be hauled away. We visit the site and give you a written quote.
Do you locate utilities before digging?
Yes. We have underground utilities marked before any excavation starts.
Do I need a permit for excavation or grading in Vancouver?
Grading, trenching in the right-of-way and demolition often need permits. We check what applies to your site.
Do you haul away the dirt?
Yes. Haul-off of soil, rock and debris is included in the quote when it is needed.
Do you work for homeowners or only builders?
Both. We do small residential jobs as well as site work for builders and businesses.
