Crawl spaces and basements are standard here, and wet soil decides how deep cuts are handled. We dig to the plans and leave room for the footing drain.
Homes around Vancouver are built on crawl space foundations, basements and slabs, so foundation excavation here covers perimeter footings, crawl space digs, full basements and slab pads. Footings must sit below the frost depth your building code sets and on firm, undisturbed soil, and the engineer's plans and soil report set the rest. Additions and accessory dwelling units are a large share of the foundation digs we do in town.
Wet soil is the main challenge. Clay and silt in the north county lose strength when saturated, and a basement dig in winter can fill with water. We plan foundation digs for drier weather when we can, use pumps when we must, and slope or shore any deep cut. Footing drains and free-draining backfill are part of most foundation work here.
We also dig along existing foundations for waterproofing and repair crews, open crawl space access, and backfill and compact after inspection. Near an existing home, we work in short sections and keep the bucket away from the footing so the soil under it is not disturbed. Backfill goes back in layers against the wall, never all at once.
Foundation excavation in Vancouver: common questions
Can you dig a basement in Vancouver?
Yes. Basements are common here, and the soil, groundwater and season decide how the dig is done.
How deep do footings go in Clark County?
Your building code sets the frost depth and the engineer's plans set the footing size and depth. Our dig follows those plans.
Do new foundations need a footing drain?
Most do here, with free-draining backfill, so groundwater does not build up against the wall.
