On HomeGuide's national pages, removing a stump averages $100 to $400 and tearing down a house $6,000 to $25,000. In Clark County, fir stumps from land clearing and old outbuildings on rural lots are the most common debris jobs.
We did not set the dollar figures on this page: they are national ranges from HomeGuide. In Clark County, wet-season clay, trees, slope, groundwater and haul distance are what push a real job up or down. Figures checked October 2026.
How much does stump removal cost?
A typical stump costs $100 to $400 to remove on HomeGuide's page. Grinding is $2 to $6 an inch of diameter with $80 to $160 minimums; pulling a stump with a backhoe is $80 to $190 each, with $150 to $350 backhoe minimums. Full root removal runs $75 to $200 an hour.
Is it better to grind fir stumps or dig them out?
Grind stumps that sit in lawn or landscape. Dig them out where a foundation, driveway, drain field or trench will go, because buried roots rot and leave a soft spot. Big Douglas fir stumps have wide root plates that an excavator can pull in one piece.
What about 20 stumps after clearing, or one huge old stump?
Clearing a lot full of stumps costs less per stump than removing one. HomeGuide lists the first stump at $120 to $400 and each additional one at $30 to $60, so 20 stumps add up to far less than 20 visits. One huge old stump, such as a big fir, maple or oak, runs $300 to $800 to grind.
Can brush be burned or buried instead of hauled?
Outdoor burning in Clark County depends on where you live, the season and any burn ban, and some urban areas do not allow it, so check with the fire district and the regional clean air agency first. Burying brush or stumps is a bad idea under anything you will build on, because they rot and the ground sinks.
Can an excavator remove boulders or buried concrete?
Yes. Basalt boulders, old footings, buried slabs and rubble come out with an excavator and a breaker when needed. HomeGuide prices rock removal at $50 to $200 a cubic yard when it stays on site and $220 to $250 when hauled.
How much to tear down an old shed, garage or barn?
To tear down a detached garage or similar outbuilding, HomeGuide gives $1,000 to $5,000, slab and haul-off included. Old barns on acreage cost more because of size and debris. Disconnect power and water first, and check for a demolition permit.
How much does it cost to demolish a house?
HomeGuide's demolition page puts a house at $4 to $10 a square foot, $6,000 to $25,000 for most homes, and up to $25 a square foot where asbestos or lead is found. A Vancouver teardown needs a demolition permit, utility disconnects, a capped sewer and often an asbestos survey first.
